Click here to become a member of our costume drama forum!

It became apparent to myself and a friend recently that there are no forums out there which are targeted directly at costume drama fans, so we have built a creative and user friendly environment in which fans of costume dramas (from Dickens to Austen to historical films ranging from ancient times to the Edwardian era) are more than welcome to come and discuss film fashion, characterization, and much more! We hope to see you there!

As always, we are constantly striving to make your visits here enjoyable and informative. Because we have such a high level of traffic with an interest in costume dramas, from now on we will be marking reviews of costume dramas with this symbol: which will make it easier for you to tell at a glance whether the review in question is for a recent-set or period film. Films marked as such take place before 1920. We hope you enjoy our changes, new design, and more friendly user interface!

Here are our most recent reviews:

5] 5 Children & It
4] Dan in Real Life
2] Desperate Housewives, Season Two
3] Elvis
4] Gilmore Girls, Season Six
4] Huck Finn
4] Little Men
4] Looking For Miracles

As of yesterday, my new computer went ballistic and I was forced to wipe the hard drive, which means I have lost all contact information for my reviewers, as well as a handful of reviews that had yet to be formatted and uploaded. If you are one of my reviewers, or sent me a review recently, please send it again or get into contact with me!!

new reviews

There are going to be a few changes around the site. I'm going to be removing some old reviews, since moderating the search function has told me that mostly what my readers want are costume dramas, recent box office hits, suspense films, and television series. I need more room on my server, so some things have to go. We will not be accepting reviews of foreign films or anything that pre-dates 1990 unless it is on a subject I feel our readers have a particular interest in. I will keep the reviews for awhile in a folder, so if anyone is interested in adding them to their classic movie review site, contact me.

3] 24 - Season Three

2] Goya's Ghosts

2] The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)

3] Agatha Christie's Miss Marple

5] Penelope

Yes, we have a new format! I know, I know, another one, but I am never happy until I can find one that looks fabulous in all browsers and I think this one will suit us well and look great besides! I hope all of you are doing great -- I had a fantastic time on my vacation, and am back and intending to update as often as I can. I will be getting The Other Boleyn Girl to you late next week, as well as Penelope. Upcoming reviews include Beowulf, Silk, Goya's Ghosts and To Kill a King.

heath ledger / 2007 movie awards

Tribute to Heath Ledger

I was stunned and saddened to hear of the recent death of Heath Ledger. He was not one of my favorite entertainers, but he never failed to amuse, touch, or inspire me in his films. It makes me sad that the entertainment industry has lost such a great talent. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.

I have compiled a list of Heath Ledger-related films on the site, in case you decide this weekend to have a memorial marathon:

+ 10 Things I Hate About You

+ Brothers Grimm

+ Casanova

+ The Four Feathers

+ A Knight's Tale

+ Ned Kelly

+ The Order

+ The Patriot

2007 Charity's Place Awards

I have put out a compilation video of all the films and actors that left an impression on us and posted it here. I encourage everyone to watch, as there are some great moments (there are mild spoilers!), but in case you are on dial-up, here is how the ranking fell:

Favorite TV Couple: Ned & Chuck (Pushing Daisies)

Favorite New Show: Moonlight

Favorite Proposal: Elinor & Edward (Sense & Sensibility)

Favorite Villain: The Master (Doctor Who)

Favorite "Lady" Villain: Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd)

Favorite Leading Man: Colonel Brandon (Sense & Sensibility)

Favorite Leading Lady: Katharine of Aragon (The Tudors)

Favorite Popcorn Flick: Stardust

Favorite Unexpected Moment: At World's End

Best Actor: Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd)

Best Actress: Cate Blanchett (The Golden Age)

Best Moral Dialogue: The Order of the Phoenix

Best Picture: Amazing Grace

Please remember to read our reviews of films before seeing them. Just because we felt an actor or character really stood out, does not mean that film fits within your personal value system. They are not recommendations so much as staff favorites.

New reviews will be posted next week.

news / new reviews

I am in the process of reformatting pages on the website, so please excuse the temporary mess. I have discovered that my site can only be viewed properly on a 1024x768 resolution. I'm sorry if some of the backgrounds seem out of alignment with lower resolutions... I am doing my best to make it beautiful no matter what resolution you are using, but that's not always possible.

Some of you have noticed that we're reviewing a lot more European films than we used to. The reasons for this are not only because we are getting more International hits all the time, but because many of our readers have region-free players and are interested in English and Australian releases as well. We also do our best to review as many costume dramas as we can, and it's a simple fact that the BBC puts out the most of them. Masterpiece Theatre is starting up again, and we'll do our best to have all their future presentations reviewed before the air dates so you know whether or not to tune in!

The search function is being put to good use! I've got over 400 searches in December and am proud to announce that we had 90% of those reviewed! Just so you know, I can monitor searches and do pay attention to what titles come up that we do not have listed. It helps me determine what our readers want to see reviewed, so don't be afraid to use that search button!

You can support Charity's Place through purchasing my books! It costs a pretty penny to host over 2,000 movie reviews and by ordering my novels, you can help me balance the expense out.

Thank you for wandering into my website. We have been around since the mid-90's and have built up over 1500 reviews, of popular television shows, Hollywood blockbusters, BBC costume dramas, and Australian films, so that you can be informed as to not only their worth, but the amount of possibly objectionable material. This has made us very popular with conservative families and individuals, and much hated among more liberal circles.

This site came about as an experiment that rapidly became a passion. Most of the reviews were written by me, but we also have occasional guest reviewers contribute. You can trust us to be fair and objective, considerate of all the opinions voiced in the screenplays and equally harsh or lenient if we feel the message is worth the faults. We're not of the opinion that everyone should stay away from certain kinds of movies. We believe that each individual should make their own decision based on a standard they have set, one that agrees with their preferences while also being pleasing to God.

It's up to you what your standards are, and remember that our recommendations are not for everyone. They appeal to personal tastes, interests, and standards.
