SING ME A MURDER REVIEWED BY RISSI C.
Our rating: 5 out of 5 Rated:
She’s at it again! Yes, bookshop owner Samantha Kinsey (Kellie Martin) is right in the middle of another murder case. A has been folk group from the seventies The Ramblers made up by a husband wife team along with a friend are trying to make a come back by touring again. When they come to town their manager Jason Hurd (Brad Rowe) convinces Samantha to let them play on the lot beside her bookstore.
Meanwhile
Philby (Clarence Williams III) Samantha’s colleague and confident has
been acting a bit mysterious of late. After a friend dies, Philby tells
Samantha that he needs to go to Detroit for the funeral. When he calls
Samantha to tell her he plans to stay longer and go fishing, Sam hears a
boarding call and checks it out. It was for Indiana. Why did Philby say he
was going fishing and what was he doing in Indiana? After The Ramblers
manager Jason is murdered, the trio is all under suspicion. When
controlling chief of police Chief Connors (Casey Sander) arrives at the
scene he is not surprised to find Sam there. After the Chief arrests a
suspect Sam will yet again, have to prove to him who is innocent and who
is guilty. With the help of her friend assistant D.A. Cassie Hillman (Nina
Siemazko) and Philby, Sam comes up with some clever ways to investigate
without the Chief finding out. This enjoyable amusing Mystery
Woman tale involves a string of bank robberies and an ex-con.
Content is limited to mild violence. It shows the crime being committed. A knife is used, but we don’t actually see it going into Jason. The camera focuses on his face and then you see him fall to the floor. There are some references made about everyone wanting to kill Jason. Mild references are made about a woman leaving her husband and having an affair with another man, resulting in a pregnancy. There may be a brief swear word, but nothing disturbing. Once again everyone is well cast. I absolutely love Nina, Kellie and Clarence together. The three of them are fabulous, you really feel like they are best friends. Their humor and sneaking around behind Chief Connors back is hilarious. Kellie and Nina are extremely well cast together; I love their teasing banter with each other. I was also excited to see that Chief Connors was in this film; while sometimes he can be irritating you can’t help but like him in the end. These are the kind of little things I like about series or movies that they make more than one of. It’s so enjoyable to see characters in more than one of the series, as you grow to love them and I applaud Hallmark for bringing these characters back.
I
actually liked this film better than the first. After all the recent
mystery shows I’ve seen, I’m finally a mystery fan, something that
surprises even me. These have just the right balance of mystery and humor.
If you are expecting this to be a Sherlock Holmes with dark, mysterious
and sometimes creepy characters, you will be disappointed. Sing me a Murder is a witty tale with enough mystery that keeps you
guessing “whodunit” and has a small town friendly feel to it. Sam is a
Nancy Drew character that keeps you laughing throughout the story. I saw Mystery Weekend and now Sing
me a Murder. The only other installment to the film series they have
chosen to release is Snapshot.
They have made five or six more, but have as yet to release them,
something I’m hoping they do in the not to distant future. Meanwhile you
can catch them currently playing on the Hallmark Channel. If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew or Angela Lansbury’s Murder She Wrote or if you have seen the entertaining movie version of the classic game Clue, check out the Mystery Woman series. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the Mystery Woman series, and don’t forget the popcorn!
